چکیده

GRB 991014 is one of the shortest gamma-ray bursts detected so far with the Wide Field Cameras aboard BeppoSAX, both in γ-rays and X-rays. The duration is 9.6 s in 228 keV and 3.2 s in 40 to 700 keV (as measured between the times when 5 and 95% of the burst photons have been accumulated). We refine the InterPlanetary Network annulus of the burst, present the detection of the X-ray afterglow of GRB 991014 within this refined annulus, and discuss X-ray and γ-ray observations of the prompt and afterglow emission. Except for the briefness of the prompt event, no other unusual aspects were found in the prompt and afterglow observations as compared to such measurements in previous gamma-ray bursts. Correlations of Prompt and Afterglow Emission in Swift Long and Short Gamma Ray Bursts

Correlation studies of prompt and afterglow emissions from gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) between different spectral bands has been difficult to do in the past because few bursts had comprehensive and intercomparable afterglow measurements. In this paper1 we present a large and uniform data set for correlation analysis based on bursts detected by the Swift mission. For the first time, short and long b...

Indication of Two Classes in the Swift Short Gamma-Ray Bursts from the XRT X-Ray Afterglow Light Curves

We present the discovery of two distinct classes in the Swift short duration gamma-ray bursts (S-GRBs) from the X-Ray Telescope (XRT) X-ray afterglow light curve. We find that about 40% of the Swift S-GRBs have an X-ray afterglow light curves which only lasts less than 104 seconds after the burst trigger (hereafter short-lived S-GRBs). On the other hand, another 60% of S-GRBs have a long lastin...

Fast X-ray Transients and Gamma-ray Bursts: Constraints on Beaming

The detection of x-ray afterglows of gamma-ray burst (GRB) sources has enabled the optical discovery that GRBs are at cosmological distances, which confirms that the enormous luminosities required must produce a relativistically expanding fireball. It is not yet clear if this expansion is quasi-spherical or beamed, or if the beaming differs between the prompt GRB and afterglow, although the dif...

The X-ray afterglow of the short gamma ray burst 050724

Short duration (<∼2 s) Gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) have been a mystery since their discovery. Until May 2005 very little was known about short GRBs, but this situation has changed rapidly in the last few months since the Swift and HETE-2 satellites have made it possible to discover X-ray and optical counterparts to these sources. Positional associations indicate that short GRBs arise in close-by ga...

Observational Prospects for Afterglows of Short Duration Gamma-ray Bursts

If the efficiency for producing γ-rays is the same in short duration (<∼ 2 s) Gamma-Ray Bursts (GRBs) as in long duration GRBs, then the average kinetic energy of short GRBs must be ∼ 20 times less than that of long GRBs. Assuming further that the relativistic shocks in short and long duration GRBs have similar parameters, we show that the afterglows of short GRBs will be on average 10–40 times...

Soft X-ray Emission Lines in the Early Afterglow of Gamma-ray Bursts

We compute the luminosity of Kα emission lines produced by astrophysically abundant elements in the soft X-ray spectra of the early afterglow of gamma-ray bursts. We find that the detection of these lines can be a diagnostic for the geometrical set-up of the reprocessing material. In particular we can distinguish between a “geometry dominated” model, in which the line emission is coming from an...
